Jakarta, Indonesia, December, 2015 – Starting December 1, 2015, three Hilton Worldwide (NYSE: HLT)hotels in Southeast Asia will embark on a sustainable coffee program, partnering Java Mountain Coffee (JMC) for the first time. This program, which focuses on responsible sourcing of coffee, is be a three-month pilot launched exclusively in three hotels in Singapore and Indonesia, namely DoubleTree Jakarta Diponegoro and Conrad Bali in Indonesia and Hilton Singapore. Hilton Worldwide will be the first global hotel company to work with JMC, an indigenous social enterprise majority-owned by women that support rural women in Java and Bali.
Ten per cent of every sale made will be invested back into JMC’s “Women’s Empowerment Innovation Fund”. This amount will be used to defray, on behalf of women farmers and workers the cost for them to join and become certified in global programs such as Fairtrade, RainForest Alliance, UTZ Certified and The Goldstandard Foundation. Once certified, farmers are better able to lift their incomes through improved sustainability and market access. It will also go to the nursey program which invests in new coffee trees and secondary income shade trees (coffee needs shade to grow) such as timber, rubber, citrus and banana. The distributing of the products and training to the Balinese and Javanese women in the program is delivered by JMC’s partner Indonesian Coffee & Coco Research Centre and monitored by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The two Java Mountain Coffee products that will be served at Executive Lounge and T Lounge, at the three hotels will be the Mocha Java Blend and Java Arabica, both of which contain “micro-roasted” grade one Arabica whole beans from Java.
The program supports Hilton Worldwide’s commitment to strengthen local communities, promote equal opportunity for women and aligns with its global corporate responsibility strategy, Travel with Purpose. In March 2014, the company signed the CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles. The signing underscores Hilton’s commitment to support capacity-building in three key areas of women in leadership, women as business partners as well as community partnerships that invest in women and girls through education, training and professional development.
