Whizzing around a game table collecting colourful food models, beaming infrared light, one of the Sinarmas World Academy (SWA) Roboknights robots collects, transports food models — and scores — and wins 2nd place at this year’s Indonesian Robotic Olympiad (IRO) 2018. By virtue of their brilliant performance at the keenly contested competition, which tasked their creative intellect, the team will represent Indonesia at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) scheduled for Thailand, 16th-18th November 2018.
The theme of this year’s robotic competition is: “Food Matters”. The mission of the robot is to make a robot that can help reduce food waste. The task of the robot is to sort food products according to their looks and expiration dates and transport the sorted food to places that can make use of the food instead wasting it. A breadbox-sized sprinter bot, analysing and sorting, from the team called ‘SWA ROBOKNIGHTS’ were up against over 30 teams from Indonesia in the ‘Food Matter’ category of the Indonesian Robotic Olympiad (IRO) held on 7th–8th September 2018 in the Tunjungan Convention Centre, Surabaya. The judges, seeing how difficult the algorithm needed for the students to accomplish the mission agreed to do a 3rd run in which 8 teams advanced in the finals while over 20 teams were eliminated. Most of the robots during the elimination round missed the mission points, yet one of exceptional robots of Roboknights from the SWA Robotics Team perfectly collected the colourful cubes, smoothly followed the black line and sorted the fruit models in each area and emerged as the champion in qualifying round and runner-up in the final round.
The most rewarding part of designing robots is that students naturally learn, value teamwork and enjoy the once in a lifetime experience.
