Dear Jakartans, Last week, Rupiah’s value to the US dollar continued to slide to a new 17 year low of Rp. 13,800 in the midst of yuan devaluation and the looming higher interest rates in the USA. Governor of Indonesia’s central bank, Agus Martowardojo, emphasized that the central bank will continue to intervene in the market in order to combat high volatility of the rupiah. While the House of Representative has stated that the rupiah exchange rate should not depreciate to any more than Rp 15,000 per US dollar.
Remains of the Trigana Air plane, which had been reportedly missing since Sunday (16/8), have been found in the Papua highland by the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency on Monday afternoon. The flight that took 49 passengers and 5 crews on board was going from Jayapura to Oksibil, Papua, or an approximately 90 minute flight. The cause of the crash is still under investigation and it is still undetermined whether there are any survivors from the crash.
A huge bomb explosion that appeared to target a popular Hindu shrine in central Bangkok killed at least 27 people on Monday evening and wounded about 120 more, authorities said to Reuters. Twelve victims died at the scene, and the others died later at area hospitals. Foreigners are among the casualties, with the Erawan Emergency Center saying that a Filipino and Chinese citizen were among those killed. The area is one of Bangkok’s busiest areas for tourists and local commuters alike. It was also the target of another bombing in February when two explosive devices detonated near the entrance of a shopping mall. Officials have yet to blame any group for the bombing.
