Hello again
fellow Jakartans!!
We do hope you all enjoyed yourselves over the last
week.
During the
last week, Mt Sinabung in Sumatra, which has
been inactive for 400 years, decided it was time to remind everyone
of its existence as an active volcano, and erupted without warning.
Ashes continue to be emitted from the volcano though the intensity
has appears to have decreased. Meanwhile some 19 nearby villages and
their 23,000 inhabitants have been evacuated to outside of a six
kilometer radius danger zone, though some have returned back to
their villages ignoring the warnings from authorities. The main
focus of assistance for the evacuee’s is for sanitation and
temporary shelter, as the weather has been very rainy and cold.
If you would like to
make a contribution (i.e. funds, goods, services or volunteers) you
can directly contact the Indonesia Red Cross – 021 7992325 ext
302/303 dmdivision@pmi.or.id
Anyway here are some
quick snippets of news from our beloved city and elsewhere in
Indonesia -
Free births
for Indonesian mothers: The most recent
maternity rate for Indonesia is 228 deaths per 100,000 births,
making it one of the highest in South East Asia. Many low-income
mothers are forced to ‘sell’ their children to pay for their
hospital maternity costs or have their babies held at ‘ransom’ until
all the bills had been paid. Others, who cannot afford to give birth
at hospitals, choose instead to have their births at home,
contributing to a high mortality rate. It was therefore very
pleasing to hear the government announce a pilot program to pay for
all births in community health centre’s (Puskesmas) and state
hospitals nationwide. All mothers, regardless of their income
brackets, are entitled to benefit from the scheme, as long as they
use the lower standard wards at these centers/hospitals. This
benefit is also limited to each mother’s first two children only.
The Ministry of Health is hoping that this program will help reduce
maternal deaths down to 102 per 100,000 births and reduce the infant
mortality rate down to 24 out of 1,000 births by 2015, thereby
meeting UN Millennium development Goal targets. Well done to the
Indonesian government on making this long overdue initiative a
reality!
Feuding
Neighbors: Indonesia’s on-again off-again feud
with its closest neighbor is still simmering after seven Malaysian
fishermen were detained by Indonesia and three Indonesian maritime
officers were detained by Malaysia in disputed waters off Riau
Islands on 13 August. The ultra-nationalist Gayang Malaysia Group
(Crush Malaysia) has been busy trying to recruit volunteers who will
undergo military style training in case the situation escalates.
From their recruitment post in front of the Proclamation Monument in
Central Jakarta, they have managed to sign up hundreds of volunteers
so far from various walks of life and ages. Let’s hope that the two
governments’ enter some mediatory discussions on how to resolve the
current dispute and to help ensure they can avoid future disputes of
a similar nature.
Former
Playboy Editor still at large: Erwin Arnada,
ill-fated former editor of the Indonesian version of Playboy
magazine, has yet to hand himself over to police in a response to a
two year sentence for indecency issued by the Supreme Court. The
ruling, which was based on criminal code, rather than press law, is
hotly contested by local media as a threat to the freedom of the
press.
Buddha Bar
in trouble again: Jakarta’s local outlet from
the well known international restaurant & lounge chain has
experienced controversy since it was opened here in 2008. In
particular, the Anti-Buddha Bar Forum has been protesting the use of
Buddha’s name and Buddhist decorations for a bar/club-style
establishment. Earlier this week, the Central Jakarta District Court
ordered that the bar be immediately shut and the owners be required
to compensate the Anti-Buddha Bar Forum Rp 1 billion (US$111,000)
for ‘mental distress’. Lawyers for the defense said that the verdict
would be appealed.
Sleep-deprived American in Lombok loses the
plot!: One would have thought that after living
in Lombok for 15 years, one would be accustomed to the regular
blasting of prayers that are broadcasted from mosques? Apparently
not, as on the night of August 22, Luke Gregory Lloyd, aged 64,
allegedly stormed into his local mosque, shoes un-removed, and
pulled the plug from the microphone and possibly assaulted one or
more worshippers. For a man in his later years, he must be quite
quick on his feet as he managed to evade an angry crowd until police
intervened and took him into (protective) custody. Locals say that
he has complained about the noise previously, however this was his
most aggressive attempt to shut the noise down. Unfortunately for
Mr. Lloyd, he has also brought attention to the fact that his visa
expired in 2006. If he is fortunate, he will be charged only for
breaking visa laws rather than the more serious offense of
blasphemy.
2,500 year
old human remains found in Bali: Archeologists
in Bali have apparently discovered human remains which date back to
around 500 BC, in stone caskets near Keramas village in Gianyar, in
the islands south east.
These latest finding make a total of 16 stone caskets found
in the area over the past four years, however many had previously
been opened and their contents already emptied. The Archeological
Society wants a museum to be built at the location to house their
findings – and which should prove to become something of a tourist
attraction.
Jakarta
Animal Aid Network (JAAN) is an animal charity
based in Jakarta dedicated towards protecting and helping animals in
Indonesia. They believe that Animal Welfare Education is vital to
ending the suffering many animals needlessly endure in Indonesia and
are willing to give talks to organizations, schools, clubs,
etc. about protecting animals and their habitats. They have been very busy over
the past few months rescuing and rehabilitating stray dogs,
orangutans, macaque monkeys, carriage horses, sea turtles, and other
animals. They have many dogs available for adoption/foster care
right now. If you are interested in adopting a dog or can
assist them with a donation (money, goods, and materials are all
welcome), please visit their website at JAKARTA ANIMAL AID
NETWORK or email jaan_adopt@yahoo.com. You can even become a JAAN Support Team Member
and enjoy discount benefits at the Animal Clinic Jakarta.
