Anyway, here are some quick snippets of news from the city and elsewhere throughout the country.
Appeal Backfires - again!
Anggodo Widjojo was convicted on corruption charges and was handed a four year sentence. He then initiated an appeal with the Jakarta High Court, who then increased his sentence to five years. He then decided to initiate another appeal, this time with the Supreme Court, who decided to increase his sentence to ten years. We assume that Widjojo has now decided that any further appeals against his sentence may not be in his best interests!
Jazzy Jakarta
The AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2011 was held 4-6 March 2011 and by all accounts was a huge success, again. Thousands of jazz lovers were entertained by some very talented musicians including Carlos Santana, George Benson, Corrine Bailey Rae, and New York Voices have given Jakarta a weekend to remember. This year was the 7th Java Jazz festival and included some 40 international and 110 local bands. Just fyi, you can see the pictures from the festival here.
“Iron Mike’ may visit Jakarta
Ex-world Heavyweight Boxing Champion, “Iron” Mike Tyson, has been invited to Jakarta to see the boxing bout between Indonesian top boxers, Chris John Vs Daud Jordan on 17 April 2011. The promoter, Raja Sapta Oktohari, said that there’s a 90-percent chance that Tyson will be here. In addition to watching the match, the boxing legend will also make a visit to Istiqlal mosque—to pray of course, not to box—and the island of Bali. Tyson converted to Islam during a stint in jail and visited Mecca in 2010.
The worlds ‘Billionaires Club’
Forbes has just released their 2011 list of the world’s billionaires. This year has the largest number of billionaires ever records – 1,215 of them. And the city with the most billionaires? Moscow. It seems the change from communism to capitalism worked well for many Moscowvites. Indonesia also fared well with 14 billionaires in the list. You can see the list here.
Lights Out Please!
March 26 is the date for the annual “Earth Hour”. Earth Hour was initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and was started in 2007 in Australia. The campaign seeks to encourage everyone around the world to turn off their lights for one hour each year, to show how much energy can be saved with a little effort but by a lot of people. So be prepared to turn off your lights from 8:30-9:30pm on March 26. Jakarta’s Governor Fauzi Bowo is also behind the campaign as well and said that the city is hoping to save 300 megawatts of electricity this year, compared the 80 megawatts saved during last years Earth Hour. You can visit the Earth Hour website for Indonesia here.
Rachel’s angels
Yayasan Rumah Rachel (Rachel’s House) motto is “To never see a child die alone, without love and care”. Their team of four nurses spend each week in Jakarta visiting children in Jakarta with cancer and HIV. Rachel House was started in 2004 by former investment banker Lynna Chandra after witnessing the passing of a close friend after a 13 year battle against cancer. This is a very worthy cause so do visit their website to see how you can assist them.
