To be held for 5 months starting May 12th to September 9th 2018, Indonesia’s first modern and contemporary art MACAN Museum will hold a survey exhibition by the legendary Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama that’s famous for her easily recognizable dots, pumpkins and infinity rooms.
The exhibition will only be the third in the world and second in Southeast Asia after previously being displayed in Queensland Art Gallery, Australia and National Gallery Singapore. Entitled Life is The Heart of A Rainbow after one of her most recent works, this survey exhibition is momentous for Indonesia’s position in the art world, considering Yayoi’s influence in modern art.
Since its opening in 2017, MACAN has displayed one of Yayoi’s signature work, Infinity Mirrored Room – Brilliance of The Souls (2014) that always attracted long lines of visitors to spend 30 seconds (the limit of time given inside) in Yayoi’s world. But this time, there will be more than 130 works of art that follow Yayoi’s artistic journey that spans more than 70 years, tracing back as early as the 1950s.
The exhibition will allow visitors to get even closer to the eccentric artist whose characteristic use of dots were said to derive from her unusual hallucinations that she started to experience since young age. She would see pattern and dense fields of dots on things around her, and patterns in fabric that she stared at started to ‘come to life’.
In this exhibition, visitors will get to see Yayoi’s seminal works like the Child Mannequin (1966), Narcissus Garden, an immersive art experience in THE SPIRIT OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS (2015), her iconic giant pumpkin, tulip, large-scale paintings and even an art video featuring herself reciting a very personal prose.
