Think of Senggigi like the Kuta and Seminyak of Bali, the main tourist destination on the island, and is formed by several different areas all lying along the same 2 lane coastal road. While pockets of development can be found in some areas, long stretches of open undeveloped land lie in between.The excellent 21-km coastal stretch from Senggigi to Pemenang winds past beautiful inlets and beaches and is an easy, exhilarating ride. Other, smaller roads meander through rugged highlands, passing secluded waterfalls and verdant rice paddies.

5. Explore some of the best surf spots you can find

Like Bali, Lombok is also world famous among surfers. One of the best kept secret surf point is the Bangko bangko beach, or also known as the Desert point, but there are plenty of other options for all standard of surfers with nine major surfing destinations located all around the Lombok coast. Kuta Beach & South Coast of Lombok (The Gerupuk Beach) also offer good quality of waves.

6. Sample the Lombok food

Although not as famous as Balinese food, The local Sasak food is comparable, yet offers slightly different touch. As the name probably indicates, the local people do love their ‘lombok’ or chillies. Many of the Sasak food use up a lot of chillies, creating a firy and refreshing spectrum of food. You don’t want to miss the local favourite of Ayam Taliwang, originally came from the town of Taliwang in Sumbawa, it is a barbecued chicken marinated with red chili, garlic, lemon juice, and other spices, usually served with Plecing Kangkung (blanched water spinach served with fresh sambal)

If you want to keep the heat to the minimum, as Lombok is still a tourist destinations, restaurants do provide Indonesian classics such as nasi goreng, sate, some Balinese food, with prices that can be half that in cities like Bali and Jakarta! and also European restaurants that are some run by foreigners that reside in the island.

7. Experience the culture

Culturally and linguistically, the Sasak people are  closely related to the Balinese, but unlike the Hindu Balinese, the majority of the people are Muslims, hence the absence of pork item in the food options. Immerse yourself in the traditional way of living of the Sasak people with a visit to their villages, with  huts made from a mixture of cow manure, straw and bamboo, ad where electricity and running water are very minimal to none. Different villages have different specialties for arts and crafts. For traditional lombok weaving, you can go to Sukarara Village in Central Lombok, for sarongs and ikats, head to Pringgasela (east Lombok).
