It’s September, and we’re fast approaching the new year in less than 100 days. With the summer going fast, it’s time to celebrate that time of the year again where music festivals are aplenty it in Europe, Australia and yes even Asia. Rapidly becoming a hub for creative generations in the music industry, Asia is now an important destination for important side-stream and mainstream artists looking to make it big. And if you don’t understand what I mean by that, you must have noticed that Asia has been home to many world-class festivals that are usually only held in Europe or The States.
Hong Kong play host to the music and technology conference and forum, Sonar, this year and is already gearing up for its second edition in March next year. Thailand’s ‘Wonderfruit’ is also slowly gaining recognition to be the country’s leading music festival, and many people are making the comparison with the off-kilter American music festival, Burning Man. We highlight three music festivals in the region by the end of the year that you may want to experience.
17 – 19 November 2017
Hong Kong Harbour Front
The Hong Kong’s celebration of music and art is on its tenth anniversary, and they are on track to making this the brand’s biggest yet. With musicians from the indie music scene such as Massive Attack, The Prodigy, Feist, Mo, The Dandy Warhols, Tinariwen, Cashmere Cats and so much more, it is the most ambitious lineup ever with sounds encompassing the spectrum of electronic and acoustic music. From hard-banging techno and electronica music to the comforting sound of African blues in the style of Tinariwen, Clockenflap is (perhaps) the region’s second destination after Fuji Rock with such diverse line-up. Held in the Harbour Front area you might want to book your hotel in the Hong Kong island to avoid congestion entering the island from neighboring areas.

14 – 17 December 2017
Siam Country Club, Pattaya, Thailand
Thailand’s pioneering sustainable and cross-cultural celebration of arts, music, and ideas is back for its fourth installment, and the brand’s second event this year in the same venue. Wonderfruit is fast gaining recognition as the region’s ‘Burning Man’, but that is not its only charm. Apart from being held in the lush green of a luxurious country club, the festival is an experience of its own, and its great to see such diverse line up that includes techno giants Richie Hawtin, Gui Boratto and Craig Richards. The event will also feature The Live Stage where the likes of Yeasayer, Wild Beasts, Nerve will be playing. And for those looking for a more eclectic taste, Wonderfruit is famous for its musical varieties, so be sure to be on the lookout for smaller, unique stages where disco magnet, Bobby Pleasure, will be playing across various stages. Check out the line-up below, and if you’re only interested in big names, then you are clearly missing the point.
